Queen’s gambits, king hunts and knight’s tours
Chess is fascinating, and this game of kings is brought to life for us by no other than Frederic Friedel, the grey eminence of the international chess world. Together with recognised chess expert Christian Hesse, he recounts his meetings with Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen and other grandmasters and world masters. The pair go back to the 1970s when the games between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky made world history. They tell of the competition against Deep Blue, in which Friedel participated and of fascinating moves from contested games. At the same time, they entertain with unsolved chess problems, puzzles and mathematical brain teasers about the king, queen and other pieces. Chess has never been written about with so much knowledge and inspiration!
“Science journalist Frederic Friedel’s encounters with the greatest players of the most recent decades and Professor Christian Hesse’s fascinating tightrope walk between chess and mathematics show us the wondrous world of the game of kings in all its glory.” Helmut Pfleger, grandmaster and ZEIT columnist
