In Baden-Baden, the former gambler Tadeus Boch comes into the possession of a mysterious playing card from a past century. Soon, he is drawn into a vortex of unexpected and inexplicable events that all seem to be connected to the ancient card. Is the card cursed? What is the purpose of the card? Who created it? Are there more like it and where are they? Many seem to be interested in answering these questions and while he tries to solve the mystery surrounding the card, Tadeus finds himself the victim of a manhunt. But then, the stakes are raised: Nothing more than his life is on the table.
