The Edelweiss Pirate

Novel

  • A family in the resistance - precisely researched, and sensitively and rousingly retold
  • The fate of Cologne resistance fighter Gertrud Kühlem and her daughter, Mucki the “Edelweiß Pirates”
  • For readers of Mechtild Borrmann or Claire Winter
  • Based on a true story

From the very beginning, the Kühlems were never a normal family. At the start of the 1920s, when pharmacist Gertrud meets worker Peter, it feels as if there are worlds between her middle-class existence and his communist environment. But their love is stronger, and apolitical Gertrud quickly becomes a passionate and eloquent advocate of communist ideals. Their young daughter, Mucki, is also always with them and their kitchen in Cologne becomes the comrades’ conspiratorial meeting place. However, when the Nazis seize power in 1933, it is not just Peter and Gertrud who must ask themselves what they are willing to sacrifice for their convictions. Mucki has inherited the fighting spirit of her parents, but goes her own particular way...
