Thomas Bugnyar ist im Leitungsteam des Departments für Verhaltens- und Kognitionsbiologie der Universität Wien sowie der Forschungsstation Haidlhof in Bad Vöslau. Dort und an der von Konrad Lorenz gegründeten Forschungsstelle Grünau im Almtal erforscht er die kognitiven und sozialen Fähigkeiten von Tieren, insbesondere von Rabenvögeln. Mit den zahlreichen neuen Erkenntnissen, die er in der Arbeit mit handaufgezogenen wie mit wildlebenden Raben und Krähen in den vergangenen 25 Jahren gewinnen konnte, gehört er zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Rabenforschern und Kognitionsbiologen.
